Tamil Nadu to get Motor Sports City for F1, F2, F3, F4 Events, Says CM: Will Promote Sports Tourism, Talent, and Use Auto Manufacturing Base to Generate Jobs and Economic Growth
On 3rd September, 2026, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announced in the Tamil Nadu Assembly about the state’s plan to develop a Motor Sports City that will be able to host Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3 and Formula 4 races.
The Motor Sports City proposed to be built in Chennai can promote sports tourism, cultivate local racing talent and build on the state’s robust automobile manufacturing base to generate employment and economic growth.
What the Motor Sports City will comprise
The proposed Motor Sports City will host an international-grade racing circuit that will be ready to host F1 races as per FIA specifications.
The Motor Sports City is expected to comprise the following:
Modern pit buildings, paddock areas, team garages
Advanced training facilities for drivers, engineers, and support staff
Infrastructure for spectators, media, and hospitality
The roads and utilities required to facilitate global motorsports events
CM Vijay stated that the facility will not merely host world-class racing events but also enable the state to spot and develop young racing talents from Tamil Nadu to compete at the national and international levels.
“The talents of youth in motorsport will be identified, and training and racing opportunities will be provided to create national and international level champions,” Vijay stated while making the announcement (under Rule 110) in the Assembly.

Auto manufacturing state to host a motorsports complex
Tamil Nadu is currently India’s premier automobile manufacturing state and is home to Hyundai, Ford’s erstwhile plant (now converted), BMW, Mercedes-Benz (nearby), Daimler India, Royal Enfield, TVS, and numerous other component suppliers. Thus, Tamil Nadu has every justification to believe that constructing a world-class motorsports complex will attract premier racing series, host international and national-scale racing events, and draw in industries that have specialized automotive manufacturing requirements.
The government expects that the presence of a world-class motorsports venue will:
Attract international racing series and teams for testing and events
Encourage specialized automotive and motorsport-related industries to establish and expand in the state
Create direct and indirect jobs in construction, operations, hospitality, and ancillary services
Promote sports tourism, with fans traveling from across India and abroad for race weekends
Possible location: Cholavaram emerges as a strong candidate
While the Chief Minister did not name the proposed site for the Motor Sports City, the state government has apparently identified Cholavaram (in Tiruvallur district near Chennai) as a likely location.
The region has a motorsport history, with a race track situated near Cholavaram lake that till 1988 hosted races.
The existing Madras International Circuit (MIC) in Irungattukottai is a premier national venue that hosts Formula 3, Formula 4, and other racing series.
Hence, developing a new and larger complex in or near Cholavaram will enable Tamil Nadu to create a cutting-edge F1 racing circuit, while also capitalizing on the pre-existing infrastructure and racing ecosystem in the region to facilitate training and other motorsports-related activities. The Motor Sports City can also serve as a specialized motorsport zone with space for expansion, testing tracks, and partnerships with automotive and motorsports industries.
Link to F1’s return to India
While it is still unclear whether India will be able to host a F1 race by 2028, the Tamil Nadu government’s announcement fits into broader efforts by the Indian government to bring F1 back to the country.
A union-level task force set up by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in June 2026 has been working towards facilitating F1’s return to India by 2028, with discussions underway about several potential venues.
Tamil Nadu’s Motor Sports City is being pitched to be able to host an Indian Grand Prix (if and when F1 returns to India by 2028). Officials and motorsport bodies in Tamil Nadu believe that the proposed Motor Sports City, with its modern and international-grade facilities, has the potential to become a premier motorsport destination that can offer a F1-ready venue, while also cultivating local talent that can compete in F1 and other premier racing series.
Economic and tourism impact of the Motor Sports City
The Tamil Nadu government has positioned the Motor Sports City as an important catalyst for economic growth and sports tourism. The Motor Sports City is expected to generate employment, both during its construction and operation, and also attract visitors for the international-scale racing events it will host.
It will also enable Tamil Nadu to promote itself as a premier destination for specialized automotive manufacturing.
In particular, regular international-scale motorsport events in Chennai could lead to an influx of domestic and global visitors every year, similar to the tourism generated by the Formula 1 Grands Prix in Singapore and Bahrain.

In the meantime, the announcement by the Tamil Nadu government indicates its desire to shift from being just India’s premier automobile manufacturing state to also being able to host premier motorsport events and cultivate racing talent from Tamil Nadu to compete at the international levels.
