Mahindra is set to expand the powertrain portfolio of its XUV 3XO compact SUV with a new CNG variant on October 15.
Once launched, the XUV 3XO will be one of the few compact SUVs in India to offer petrol, diesel, electric and CNG powertrain options. This will allow Mahindra to compete more directly with the Tata Nexon iCNG, Maruti Suzuki Brezza CNG and other fuel-efficient family SUVs.
The company has not revealed the complete specifications, variant details, mileage figures and price of the XUV 3XO CNG yet. These are expected to be announced at its debut. However, the company is expected to offer a factory-fitted CNG system over an aftermarket conversion, which should provide better integration, safety and manufacturer support.
A new CNG option for the XUV 3XO
The XUV 3XO is already available with multiple petrol and diesel engines while its electric version offers zero-emission. The addition of CNG will attract customers looking for lower-cost but not yet ready to switch to an electric vehicle.
Mahindra is expected to base the CNG version on the 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine. In its petrol version, the three-cylinder engine produces approx 110 bhp and 200 Nm, depending on the variant and transmission. However, it is to be expected that the CNG versions will produce less power and torque than their petrol counterparts as the fuel has different combustion characteristics.
The final CNG output has yet to be confirmed but Mahindra may tune the engine for improved low-speed drivability and fuel efficiency rather than outright performance, which makes sense as most CNG buyers will prioritise economy, reliability and daily use over acceleration.
The transmission options are also unconfirmed. The CNG variant could initially be offered with a manual gearbox while an automatic version could be introduced later depending on the demand and engineering feasibility.
Expected efficiency and running costs
The biggest advantage of the XUV 3XO CNG will be its lower cost. CNG is generally cheaper than petrol per kilometre, making it very suitable for daily commuters, high-mileage usage and families that frequently travel within cities.
The official fuel-efficiency figure will be announced at its launch but the XUV 3XO CNG could provide an expected efficiency of around 25-28 km/kg under certified test conditions. Real-world economy will be influenced by traffic, driving style, passenger load, tyre pressure and the availability of CNG stations.
The turbocharged engine could give the Mahindra an advantage over some naturally aspirated CNG rivals. The engine’s ability to provide stronger torque at low engine speeds would be beneficial when carrying passengers or climbing inclines. However, the engine calibration will be critical to achieving its potential. If Mahindra prioritises refinement, the CNG XUV 3XO could become one of the more capable CNG compact SUVs in the segment.
Design and features expected to remain familiar
The CNG variant is unlikely to see major exterior design changes. It should retain the XUV 3XO’s distinctive styling, including its high bonnet, broad stance, C-shaped rear lighting, muscular wheel arches and compact SUV proportions.
Depending on the selected variant, the CNG model could carry subtle badges indicating its fuel type. It may also receive a revised boot floor to accommodate the CNG cylinder.
The standard XUV 3XO is known for its strong equipment list. Many of these features are expected to carry over onto the CNG version:
Large touchscreen infotainment system.
Digital instrument cluster.
Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Automatic climate control.
Rear air-conditioning vents.
Electric sunroof on higher variants.
Rear parking camera and sensors.
Connected-car technology.
Six airbags and electronic stability control.
Mahindra could restrict the CNG powertrain to selected mid- and high-spec variants. This will allow the company to balance the price, equipment and production complexity.
The boot-space challenge
One of the biggest compromises of any CNG vehicle is its reduced luggage capacity. The large CNG cylinder generally occupies space beneath the boot floor or behind the rear seats. The XUV 3XO already has a relatively compact boot in comparison to some rivals, so the addition of a CNG tank, could further limit the usable luggage space.
This may be a concern for buyers that regularly travel with large suitcases or use the SUV for long-distance family trips. Mahindra could address the issue with a cleverly designed tank, but this could increase the weight and cost. The company may also provide a limited petrol reserve, allowing the driver to continue its journey if a CNG station is not available. The petrol tank size and fuel-switching system will be important details to watch out for at the launch.
Expected price and rivals
The current XUV 3XO range starts at approximately Rs. 7.79 lakh and goes up to around Rs. 15.04 lakh, depending on the variant and powertrain. The CNG model is expected to have a premium of approximately Rs. 1Lakh over the equivalent petrol variant, meaning its expected starting price is near Rs. 9 lakh.
Its main rivals will be:
Tata Nexon iCNG.
Maruti Suzuki Brezza CNG.
Hyundai Exter CNG.
Maruti Suzuki Fronx CNG, depending on its positioning.
The XUV 3XO could stand out with its strong road presence, safety equipment, turbocharged engine and premium features. However, the Brezza and Nexon may continue to have advantages with their established CNG technology and service reach, along with the boot packaging.
The Mahindra XUV 3XO CNG is an important addition to the company’s compact SUV portfolio, expanding its offerings with an additional fuel type. Offering four powertrain options will give buyers in one model family an unusual range of choices. The petrol version will appeal to performance-driven customers, the diesel will cater to those who use the roads for longer distances, the electric model will target zero-emission buyers and the CNG version will focus on providing affordable daily mobility.
The final verdict will depend on the fuel efficiency, boot space, transmission options and price. If Mahindra manages to keep CNG premium reasonable while retaining the XUV 3XO’s strong safety and feature package, the new variant could become a serious rival to the Tata Nexon and Maruti Suzuki Brezza when it debuts on October 15.
