German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen is gearing up to introduce its compact sub-4-metre SUV in India in 2027. In doing so, the carmaker is entering one of the largest and most competitive passenger-vehicles segments of India where it will compete with popular SUVs like Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Kia Sonet, Mahindra XUV 3XO, and Skoda Kylaq.
According to the plan of the carmaker, the Volkswagen SUV will be made in India and will be the most affordable SUV in India’s Volkswagen stable. However, the manufacturer hasn’t confirmed the name, design, equipment and specification details or the exact release date of the new model yet.
Volkswagen SUV for India
The Volkswagen SUV will use the MQB-A0-IN platform, which is a dedicated India architecture developed by Volkswagen Group for some of its models. Currently, the Volkswagen Taigun, Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Kushaq, and Skoda Kylaq utilise this architecture.
The platform has been designed considering the high level of localisation in order to make the cars cost-competitive and more suited for the Indian market condition. Thus, by using the same platform, Volkswagen will be able to leverage on the existing engineering, supplier and manufacturing expertise in order to develop its new model for the compact SUV segment.
The forthcoming SUV is expected to share the mechanical foundation with the Skoda Kylaq while having a distinct exterior design, interior design, and brand identity. This will allow Volkswagen and Skoda to target different consumer segments while utilising some common parts in their SUVs.
It is not known whether the forthcoming Volkswagen SUV will be positioned as a sibling to the Kylaq or not.
Design and Equipment Details Not Confirmed by VW
Volkswagen hasn’t released any official photos or design details of the compact SUV yet. The SUV is expected to carry styling cues taken from its global SUV range of the brand, but adapted to fit the dimensions and demands of the Indian market.
Being a sub-4-metre SUV, this model is expected to strike the right balance between compact dimensions and practical cabin space. This segment is popular with buyers who prefer SUVs with higher sitting height and rugged look but want the convenience of manoeuvring through busy city streets.
The car is likely to get several modern amenities demanded by customers belonging to this class. These may comprise of a touchscreen infotainment system, connected-car technology, digital instrument cluster, auto climate control, multiple airbags, electronic stability control, and a rear parking camera.
Nevertheless, none of these features have been disclosed by the German car manufacturer. Volkswagen is supposed to provide more information about the SUV before its launch.

Possible Powertrain Options
The engine and transmission of the new compact SUV by Volkswagen have not been announced by the automaker. According to some reports, the vehicle could be powered by Volkswagen’s 1.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine. The engine is used in other Volkswagen and Skoda models of cars produced for India.
The turbo-petrol engine offers a good compromise between performance and efficiency. It could be offered along with both manual and automatic transmissions.
The availability of different transmissions would enable Volkswagen to target a wider range of consumers. While a manual gearbox would attract buyers interested in a more affordable variant of the vehicle, an automatic one would suit customers who spend much time in city traffic jams.
Currently, there are no details confirming any diesel engine, hybrid system, or electric powertrain options. The first iteration of the model will concentrate on a petrol engine, but in future versions of the car, everything could change based on market demand, regulations, and Volkswagen’s electrification plans in India.
Positioned as Volkswagen’s Most Affordable SUV
The new sub-4-meter model is expected to become Volkswagen’s most affordable SUV in the Indian market. The positioning of the new model will enable the company to attract customers, who find Volkswagen products too expensive at the moment.
Compact SUVs have become extremely popular in India since they combine design, practicality, and high perceived value. Customers prefer SUVs over hatchbacks and sedans, and it is very important for all automakers to have a competitive SUV in this class.
Now, Volkswagen sells its Taigun as the compact SUV offering. The new compact SUV will be positioned under the Taigun and will make the SUV range of Volkswagen broader.
The new SUV could attract customers interested in German-engineered driving dynamics, premium cabin interior, and reliable safety features.
Local manufacture will also allow Volkswagen to prepare for the model’s or relevant parts’ exportation into other regions in the future. The rising number of companies that are developing their manufacturing base in the country allows for finding a relatively cheap production location.
Strong competition awaits
The compact SUV by Volkswagen will compete with some established models within its segment. Currently, the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Kia Sonet, Mahindra XUV 3XO, and Skoda Kylaq are offering the buyers plenty of choices of cars in terms of engine types: petrol, diesel, turbocharged and electric.
In order to stand out from those cars, Volkswagen will have to offer a car with competitive pricing and great design, advanced features, safety equipment and good after-sales services. The Volkswagen’s driving dynamics and European design language may be used to attract more buyers, however, pricing still remains the key element of success.
It is obvious that Volkswagen made the right choice confirming the existence of the SUV model much earlier before the launch. The company should be expecting more details about the name, design, equipment and engines of the upcoming SUV before its launch in 2027.
Thus, with the local manufacture, India-specific platform and target on the largest segment of passenger vehicles in the country, the upcoming Volkswagen SUV can make a breakthrough for the brand. At the same time, it will give the company a bigger presence on the rapidly growing compact SUV market.
