Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India has entered the lightweight adventure segment with the launch of the XR300L and XR300 Rally.
The former starts at Rs. 1.83 lakh and the latter at Rs. 2.08 lakh, both ex-showroom Bengaluru. The company has gone all out to make these dual-sport motorcycles competitive against the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, KTM 390 Adventure, and Hero Xpulse 200 4V. The XR300L and XR300 Rally are available on Honda BigWing premium dealerships and signify Honda’s return to the off-road motorcycle segment.
Engine
The 293.5cc, single-cylinder, air and oil-cooled engine is a familiar powerplant from the Honda CB300F. Honda has yet to release the claimed power and torque figures from the engine in India. However, the identical engine makes 24.3 bhp and 26.5 Nm of torque in other markets. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The air and oil-cooling system ensures that the powerplant does not overheat in the summer temperatures of India.
Chassis and Suspension
Both the XR300L and XR300 Rally share the same set of chassis and suspension components.
Suspension:
Long stroke telescopic forks upfront with oil and air chambers.
The Rear suspension comprises a pro-link mono-shock with gas chamber and preload adjuster.
Wheels and Tyres:
The front wheel size is 21 inches, while the rear measures 18 inches. Both wheels are spoked wheels – a tried and tested off-road technology that allows the bikes to negotiate rough terrain with ease. The bikes wear dual-purpose tyres at both ends.
Brakes:
Petal disc brakes at both ends equipped with channel ABS. The rear disc also has an off switch for ABS, allowing the rider to induce slides and drifts on gravel.
Traction Control:
Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) is also standard on the XR300L and XR300 Rally. It offers 3 modes to choose from and helps maintain grip on challenging terrains.
XR300L vs XR300 Rally
The XR300L and XR300 Rally are fundamentally different bikes, despite being from the same manufacturer. The XR300 Rally is a more premium and loaded version of the standard XR300L. The two dual-sport motorcycles differ in the following ways:
Honda XR300L (Rs. 1.83 Lakh) – The entry-level adventure bike offers minimal equipment to explore the rough terrain. Its 7.8-L fuel capacity is just sufficient to cover the city commutes and weekend adventures. The bike features an LCD instrument console, minimal but functional switchgear, and standard body parts.
Honda XR300 Rally (Rs. 2.08 Lakh) – The XR300 Rally offers several improvements over the XR300L. The Rally features a 13-L fuel tank, an upgrade over the standard XR300L model. The larger fuel capacity allows the XR300 Rally to travel longer distances on a single tank of fuel. The Rally variant features a 5-inch TFT display with connectivity options as well as smartphone app compatibility. In addition to the standard switchgear, the Rally variant gets more switchgear options to manage the additional features. The Rally variant also features a taller screen, knuckle guards, and rally-specific body panels.
Design and Ergonomics
The XR300L and XR300 Rally share the same design language. They both have a typical dual-sport silhouette with the beak front fender and narrow seats. Honda has also kept the seat height high at around 850-870 mm. The kerb weight should be in the region of 155-160 kg. The XR300L and XR300 Rally should make for a comfortable rider triangle for the average Indian male.
Pricing
The Honda XR300L and XR300 Rally prices start at Rs. 1.83 lakh and Rs. 2.08 lakh, respectively.
Competitors:
Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 – Priced at Rs. 2.80 Lakh
KTM 390 Adventure – Priced at Rs. 2.90 Lakh
Hero Xpulse 200 4V – Priced at Rs. 1.55 Lakh
Yamaha Lander 250 – Priced at Rs. 1.80 Lakh
The XR300L is the most affordable among its competitors, with the XR300 Rally priced lower than the Royal Enfield Himalayan by nearly Rs. 1 Lakh. However, the Yamaha Lander 250 is also in the same price bracket as the XR300L.
Availability
The bookings for Honda XR300L and XR300 Rally have already opened at the Honda BigWing dealerships across the country. However, the deliveries will start only from 2027. This means that there is a long wait for the customers before they can get their hands on the XR300L or XR300 Rally.
The Honda XR300L and XR300 Rally are new adventures motorcycles that compete directly with the Royal Enfield Himalayan, KTM 390 Adventure, and Hero Xpulse 200 4V. The XR300L and XR300 Rally feature an identical 293.5cc single-cylinder engine that is liquid-cooled. The XR300L is the entry-level adventure bike that gets the minimal equipment to explore the off-road trails. On the other hand, the XR300 Rally is more equipped and loaded to tackle the toughest terrains. The XR300 Rally features a larger fuel tank and more switchgear options. It also comes with a 5-inch TFT display with smartphone connectivity. The XR300 Rally has a more extensive fuel capacity, making it suitable for long-distance adventures. Overall, the Honda XR300L and XR300 Rally offer great value for money and should be a worthy competitor to the Royal Enfield Himalayan and KTM 390 Adventure.
