Lando Norris clinched the second successive F1 victory by winning the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix held at Zandvoort Circuit. The McLaren driver edged out Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli by 11.536 seconds after an intense battle with changing track conditions, a red flag on the first lap, and a late strategic battle.
Antonelli grabbed the second spot and extended his championship lead, whereas Mercedes teammate George Russell secured the third place, which gave his team a double-podium finish despite Russell failing to record a second victory of the weekend after his Sprint win.
Also, the Dutch Grand Prix was the last F1 race at Zandvoort Circuit for the foreseeable future, making Norris’ win even more special for the race and its fans.
Verstappen Crash At the Start of the Race
Max Verstappen started from the pole position and led the race before retiring in the initial laps due to losing control of his Red Bull on the drying track. The crash triggered the red flag and disrupted the race’s initial phase. Verstappen wanted to finish his home race on a high note, given that he recently announced the signing of a new contract extension with Red Bull Racing.
However, the four-time world champion struggled to match the pace of the frontrunners during the entire weekend. In fact, he admitted that the team was not fast enough to compete at the front.
The retirements of Verstappen, who wanted to end his home race weekend with a victory, dealt a heavy blow to the home crowd and impacted the championship battle. Also, it took away one of the top drivers from the highly anticipated battle.
Antonelli Seizes Control after Re-Start
After the re-start, Norris initially lost the lead to Antonelli. The latter took advantage of the situation and seized the lead by battling Norris for the position.
Unlike Norris, the latter did not respond to Antonelli with an aggressive move. Rather, he managed his tyres and waited for the perfect time to reclaim the lead.
Such opportunity came up on Lap 52. Norris overtook Antonelli from the outside at Turn 1 and seized the lead. On the same lap, he also managed to overtake Lewis Hamilton, who drives for Ferrari, and took the first position.
It showed Norris’ ability to manage his race and wait for the right time to make the right move instead of making a rash move like other drivers do.
Virtual Safety Car Creates a Strategic Battle
Further excitement occurred when Esteban Ocon stopped on track, resulting in a virtual safety car. This event caused an additional tactical battle between the leaders.
While Antonelli and some other racers opted to pit, Norris and Russell stayed on track. With such an approach, Norris maintained track position, although he had to cope with worn-out tyres in the end.
Russell eventually let Antonelli pass on Lap 65. However, by this moment, Norris had already established a good gap and had the chance to be in charge of the race.
Norris finished the race 11.536 seconds ahead of Antonelli to claim another victory. This success made it the second consecutive triumph and added to McLaren’s efforts in the championship battle.

Norris Compliments McLaren’s Strategy
Norris admitted that the victory was one of his better races. He claimed that the race was hard but McLaren had managed the strategy and pace quite effectively.
He had to react to the loss of the lead on the restart, to return past Antonelli and Hamilton, and to protect his position in the virtual safety car period.
Back-to-back victories allowed him to move up to fourth place in the standings. Norris now is 24 points away from Mercedes’ Russell and Hamilton who are equal points.
The result gives McLaren additional momentum as the season enters the next stage.
Mercedes Claim Double Podium Finish
Second-place finish was enough for Antonelli to increase the lead in the championship by 59 points over Russell. Although he did not take the victory, the Mercedes driver showed himself as an excellent title contender.
Russell finished in third place, holding off Hamilton. Although the Briton was not able to repeat his Sprint victory, he was happy with his performance at the weekend.
Double podium was a great result for Mercedes. It provided the team with additional points in the championship battle. It should be noted that Antonelli’s consistent scoring is a great factor in this case as the young driver builds a big lead over his opponents.
Hamilton finished in fourth place for Ferrari, beating his teammate Charles Leclerc in fifth place. Ferrari had difficulties to catch the pace of McLaren and Mercedes, yet managed to take valuable points.
Piastri in Sixth Position
Oscar Piastri secured a sixth position for McLaren finishing right behind Norris. Even though Piastri didn’t manage to climb the podium, he contributed to McLaren’s strong team performance at the Dutch GP.
Piastri’s position helped McLaren secure two solid points as tyre management and changing conditions were important at the venue.
Lawson secured the seventh position for Red Bull Racing replacing the injured Isack Hadjar at this round. Despite the driver receiving a 10-second penalty for yellow-flag infringement, he managed to finish in the top-seven positions.
Nico Hulkenberg scored the eighth position for Audi securing important points for the team. Alonso ended up in ninth position for Aston Martin, which suggests that recent team improvements finally show positive results.
Gasly rounded off the top-10 finishing positions for Alpine.
Tight Championship Race
At the moment, the difference between Antonelli and Russell in the standings has shrunk to 59 points. At the same time, Hamilton finds himself level with Russell with Norris approaching Mercedes’ drivers after recent victories.
Dutch GP showed how difficult and unpredictable the 2026 season can be, especially considering that Verstappen retired at the early stages, there were changing track conditions and late Virtual Safety Car at the end of the race.
With Norris showing excellent results recently and Mercedes securing regular points, the championship is open for competition at the moment. McLaren hopes that their improvement will help Norris and Piastri challenge Mercedes in the remaining races of the season.
Next Formula 1 race will take place at Monza Circuit during the Italian Grand Prix on September 4 – 6, where teams will have to focus on speed, efficient braking and good aerodynamics.
McLaren won the race once again as Norris achieved the second consecutive victory and Antonelli secured the second position helping to improve his standing in the championship.
