Jaguar has made a comeback, and it’s been a long time coming.
The British luxury icon has unveiled its very first production electric vehicle, the Jaguar Type 01, after years of controversy, brand rework, and nothing but silence from the manufacturer. It’s a 1,030 HP tri-motor electric grand tourer with a claimed range of 644 km (WLTP) with a design that’s sure to raise eyebrows. Priced at starting at £130,000 (approx. Rs. 1.5 crore) and will be available in early 2027, the Jaguar Type 01 is Jaguar’s first shot at the electric vehicle market, vying for customers against the likes of BMW and Mercedes-Benz, not just Porsche and Lucid.
Power: 1,030 HP of Electric Fury
Let’s kick this off with the numbers, shall we? The Jaguar Type 01 is powered by a tri-motor all-wheel-drive system with a combined output of 1,030 PS (1,015 HP) and 1,365 Nm of torque.
Performance Figures:
0–100 km/h: 3.2 seconds
0–180 km/h: 6.2 seconds
100–180 km/h: 4.0 seconds (Jaguar’s “more useful” figure)
Top Speed: electronically limited to 241 km/h (150 mph)
Power isn’t the only strong point about the Type 01, though. It’s also incredibly quick on the highway thanks to the in-gear acceleration (100–180 km/h). This is a key point the manufacturer has focused on, giving the Type 01 just enough power to overtake at the highway without breaking a sweat. The 850-volt architecture will support the tri-motor system, giving the vehicle its instantaneous torque delivery.
Battery & Range: 644 KM of electric freedom
Range anxiety, what’s that? The Jaguar Type 01 has an 118 kWh usable battery (120 kWh total capacity) made up of nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) prismatic cells. The battery pack is split up into two, 32 cells mounted in the front passenger bulkhead, and the remaining are in a shallow 5.9-inch floor section, keeping the car’s center of gravity low, and the profile sleek.
Range & Charging:
WLTP Range: up to 720 km (450 miles)
EPA Range: up to 644 km (400 miles)
Sustained Highway Range: up to 520 km (320 miles) at 75 mph cruising
DC Fast Charging: 350 kW capability, which will add 320 km (200 miles) of range in 13 minutes
10–80% Charge Time: approx. 22 minutes with a 350 kW charger
These figures place the Jaguar Type 01 in the same class as the Lucid Air Sapphire and Porsche Taycan Turbo S but with a more grand touring feel to it.
Design: A radical departure
The Type 01 is a four-door, four-seat electric grand tourer, with a fastback silhouette that stretches 5,235 mm in length but only 1,403 mm in height. That’s over 14 cm shorter, than a Bentley Flying Spur and closer to a sports coupe. Some notable design highlights include:
Grille-less front end
Glassless tailgate (this caused quite a stir!)
Flush door handles and hidden charging port
22-inch alloy wheels
The interior is equally as radical, with a driver-centric cockpit, floating center console, and a minimalistic approach to the controls. Although the rear headroom was sacrificed for the good of the proportions, the Type 01 is sure to seat four comfortably.
Technology: 850V Architecture & Rear-wheel steering
The Jaguar Type 01 is powered by Jaguar’s bespoke Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA) 850-volt architecture, enabling 350 kW DC fast charging and instantaneous torque delivery. Some of the technologies on offer include:
Rear-wheel steering with a 11.5-meter turning circle, making the 5.2 m long car more maneuverable.
Air suspension that drops the car by 15 mm at higher speeds for better aerodynamics and efficiency.
Tri-motor torque vectoring that controls torque delivery to the rear wheels for better handling and stability.
Advanced ADAS suite including adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and automated emergency braking.
Pricing & Availability: Exclusive & Expensive
The Jaguar Type 01 is not for everyone. With a starting price of £130,000 in the UK (approx. $130,500 in the US and Rs. 1.5–2.2 crore in India), the car is definitely an ultra-premium luxury GT. Orders will be opened in early 2027, with the first deliveries expected in the second half of 2027. The cars will be manufactured at Jaguar’s Solihull plant in the UK with battery packs and drive units being manufactured in Wolverhampton.
The Bottom Line: Can the cat strike back?
The Jaguar Type 01 is a shot in the dark for the British icon, fighting for its place in the electric vehicle market against the likes of BMW and Mercedes-Benz, not just Porsche and Lucid. With more power than the Porsche Taycan and a range that most EVs can’t match, will buyers be interested in the radical new design from Jaguar? Or, will the brand continue to fade away into the sunset?
