Dual-Cylinder Tech, Turbo-Petrol Power & A Boot-Saving Trick That Could SCARE Tata Nexon iCNG!
Mahindra & Mahindra is set to launch the XUV 3XO CNG in India today, October 15, 2026. This will be Mahindra’s first CNG SUV and will make the XUV 3XO one of the few compact SUVs in India to offer petrol, diesel, electric and CNG powertrain options.
The biggest highlight is the dual-cylinder CNG setup, which uses two smaller cylinders rather than one large tank to preserve more usable boot space, a much-needed feature for CNG cars.
Dual-Cylinder CNG: The Key Feature
The XUV 3XO CNG gets two CNG cylinders that are mounted side-by-side under the boot floor. They are secured with metal retaining straps.
Unlike a single-cylinder CNG setup, the dual-cylinder layout leaves some usable luggage space above the tanks. This is important since the XUV 3XO already has one of the smallest boots in the compact SUV segment.
CNG system highlights:

Designed to preserve usable boot space
Dedicated petrol/CNG mode selector
Factory-fitted CNG system
Reports suggest that the twin cylinders could provide a combined capacity of around 60 litres, providing approximately 8 kg of usable CNG. However, Mahindra is expected to confirm the final tank capacity and CNG range at launch.
Engine: 1.2L Turbo-Petrol Expected
The XUV 3XO CNG is expected to get Mahindra’s 1.2-litre mStallion TCMPFi turbo-petrol engine. The multi-point fuel injection version rather the more powerful direct-injection TGDi unit is expected to be used.
The standard petrol version of this engine produces 110 hp and 200 Nm. In CNG mode, the output is expected to be slightly lower, which is typical for factory-fitted CNG vehicles.
Expected powertrain details:
Engine: 1.2-litre turbo-petrol MPFi
Petrol output: 110 hp and 200 Nm
CNG output: Expected to be lower
Transmission: Only 6-speed manual likely
Fuel options: Petrol and CNG
The CNG variant is expected to be offered only with a manual gearbox initially. Mahindra may introduce an automatic CNG option later depending on demand.
Design: No Major Changes Expected
The XUV 3XO CNG is expected to look the same as the standard petrol version. Spy shots show the same body design, LED lighting and overall silhouette.
Expected exterior features:
Same as standard XUV 3XO
16-inch alloy wheels
Single-pane electric sunroof
LED lighting
CNG-specific badging
Mahindra is expected to focus on the CNG technology rather than making major design changes. The SUV is expected to retain its bold front grille, split headlamp setup and rugged compact SUV stance.
Interior and Features
The leaked CNG variant appears to be a mid-spec model with fabric upholstery. However, it is expected to retain several premium features from the standard XUV 3XO.
Expected interior features:
10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system
10.25-inch digital instrument cluster
Electric single-pane sunroof
Fabric upholstery
Three-spoke steering wheel
Engine start-stop button
Dual-zone climate control
Power-adjustable driver’s seat
Dedicated petrol/CNG switch
The dual-screen setup and sunroof makes the XUV 3XO CNG one of the more feature-rich CNG SUVs in its segment. The 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster is also expected to display CNG-specific information such as fuel level and range.

Why Dual-Cylinder CNG Matters
Most CNG cars use a single large cylinder in the boot which severely reduces luggage space. Mahindra’s dual-cylinder setup uses two small cylinders to preserve more usable boot space.
This dual-cylinder boot-saving setup is first introduced by Tata Motors and later adopted by Hyundai. It helps preserve more usable boot space while still providing a decent CNG capacity.
For buyers who need a CNG car for their daily commute but also need to carry luggage, this is a great feature.
Expected Price
Mahindra has not officially announced the price of the XUV 3XO CNG yet. However, it is expected to cost around Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1 lakh more than the equivalent petrol variant.
The standard XUV 3XO is currently priced between Rs. 7.79 lakh and Rs. 15.04 lakh ex-showroom. The CNG version is expected to be in the mid variants, possibly between Rs. 9 lakh and Rs. 11 lakh.
Competition
The XUV 3XO CNG will compete with:
Tata Nexon iCNG
Maruti Suzuki Brezza S-CNG
Hyundai Exter CNG
Tata Punch CNG
Its biggest rivals are the Tata Nexon iCNG and Maruti Brezza S-CNG. The XUV 3XO CNG could differentiate with its turbo-petrol engine, feature-rich cabin and dual-cylinder boot-saving setup.
Expected Mileage
Mahindra has not confirmed the official CNG mileage yet. However, industry estimates suggest the XUV 3XO CNG could deliver around 22-24 km/kg.
At current CNG prices, this could translate into a running cost of around Rs. 3.6-4 per km, far cheaper than the equivalent petrol SUV.
Should You Buy It?
The Mahindra XUV 3XO CNG is aimed at buyers who want a compact SUV with low running costs but don’t want to compromise on features or performance.
Buy it if:
You want a CNG SUV with a turbo-petrol engine
You need lower fuel costs for your daily commute
You want a feature-rich cabin with a sunroof and dual screens
You want more boot space than a single-cylinder CNG car
Skip it if:
You want an automatic CNG SUV
You need maximum boot space
You want a diesel or electric powertrain
You want the lowest purchase price
With its dual-cylinder CNG setup, 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine and feature-rich cabin, the Mahindra XUV 3XO CNG could become one of the most practical and exciting CNG SUVs in India. The launch today will reveal the final price, mileage and variant details.
