Kawasaki has announced the all-new Versys 900, a premium sport-touring motorcycle based on the Z900. The bike uses the 948cc inline-four engine from the Z900, which has been retuned for touring, developing 122 PS (120 bhp) and 97.3 Nm of torque.

The most notable feature is that the Versys 900 becomes the first Versys to provide radar-based rider assistance such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Forward Collision Warning. The new trellis frame, long-travel suspension, 17-inch wheels and touring-oriented electronics should make the Versys 900 one of the most advanced middleweight sport-tourers in the world.

Engine: Z900-Derived 948cc Inline-Four

The Versys 900 gets a 948cc, water-cooled and 16-valve inline-four engine borrowed from the Z900. Kawasaki has retuned it for more tractable touring performance rather than aggresive sport-touring.

Engine specifications:

Engine: 948cc, liquid-cooled, inline-four

Power: 122 PS (120 bhp) at 9,500 rpm

Torque: 97.3 Nm at 8,000 rpm

Transmission: 6-speed

Quickshifter: Standard

Compared to the Z900, the Versys 900 engine produces slightly less peak power and torque. The Z900 puts out 124 hp and 97.4 Nm of torque, whereas the Versys 900 produces 122 hp and 97.3 Nm of torque. However, the touring bike should be more tractable for touring duties.

The engine is mated to a six-speed gearbox with a standard quickshifter for clutchless upshifts and downshifts to ease long-distance touring.

Radar-Based Safety: A Major First

The new Versys 900 is the first Versys motorcycle to get Kawasaki’s ARAS (Advanced Rider Assistance System) package that uses front and rear radar sensors to enhance rider safety.

Radar-based features:

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

Forward Collision Warning

Blind-spot monitoring

Radar-based assistance for the rear

ACC should be a major plus for the touring motorcycle, which can help reduce rider fatigue on highways by maintaining a set speed and automatically adjusting its speed according to the vehicle in front. The Forward Collision Warning system also makes the Versys 900 one of the most advanced middleweight sport-tourers in the world.

New Trellis Frame and Touring Hardware

Kawasaki has developed a new trellis frame for the Versys 900, which offers a blend of stability, comfort and agility. It should enable the touring motorcycle to tackle highways and twisty roads with equal measure.

Although the Versys 900 sticks to the traditional Versys formula of 17-inch alloy wheels at both ends, the bike would be more of a sport-tourer than a true adventure bike. However, the new trellis frame and 17-inch wheels are expected to handle the Indian roads better.

Expected hardware:

New trellis frame

Long-travel suspension

17-inch alloy wheels

Touring-friendly ergonomics

Larger fuel tank

Roomier seat

Luggage accessory options

Compared to the Z900, the Versys 900 should get more suspension travel, larger fuel tank, higher kerb weight and more comfortable seat. The touring bike should offer better two-up touring comfort compared to the Z900.

2027 Kawasaki Versys 900 Based On Z900 Revealed

Design: Aggressive Yet Practical

The Versys 900 follows Kawasaki’s standard Versys design language, but with a taller front beak, adjustable windscreen and a muscular fuel tank. The new sport-tourer looks more aggressive compared to the Versys 650 but retains the practical, upright riding position preferred by touring riders.

Design highlights:

Tall front beak

Adjustable windscreen

Muscular fuel tank

Comfortable touring seat

Full LED lighting

17-inch alloy wheels

Optional panniers and top box

Adjustable windscreens are always a plus for long-distance touring motorcycle, as they allow riders to reduce wind buffeting at different riding positions and speeds.

Electronics and Features

The new Versys 900 is expected to come with an extensive electronics package that includes:

TFT colour display

IMU-assisted rider aids

Traction control

Cornering ABS

Riding modes

Quickshifter

Cruise control

Smartphone connectivity

Assisted rider electronics such as cornering ABS and traction control should enhance rider safety on twisty roads and during braking. The TFT display should offer intuitive access to navigation, riding modes and other vehicle information.

India Launch and Expected Price

Kawasaki hasn’t formally announced the launch of the Versys 900 in India. However, since India already gets the Versys-X 300, Versys 650 and Versys 1100, there’s no reason why the 900 won’t follow soon. Industry sources expect the new sport-tourer to launch in India in the first half of 2027, with an ex-showroom price of anywhere between Rs. 10 lakh and Rs. 11 lakh, depending on import duties and variants.

Expected India price:

Base variant: Rs. 10–10.25 lakh

Higher variant with luggage: Rs. 11 lakh or more

If Kawasaki brings the new Versys 900 to India, it should fit in between the Versys 650 and 1100, offering a powerful inline-four engine with touring-oriented features.

Competition

The new Kawasaki Versys 900 will take on the likes of:

Triumph Tiger Sport 660

Yamaha Tracer 9 GT

BMW F 900 XR

Suzuki GSX-S1000GX

Kawasaki Versys 1100

The biggest advantages of the new Versys 900 are the inline-four engine, radar-based safety features and Kawasaki’s brand value. However, the sport-tourer could offer a more engaging engine character compared to the parallel-twin engines used on the competition.

Should You Wait for It?

The Kawasaki Versys 900 isn’t just another touring motorcycle. It brings the thrill of a Z900-derived inline-four engine with the comfort of a premium sport-tourer.
