Volkswagen has unveiled the ID. Tiguan concept, which will replace the ID.4 and ID.5 electric SUVs in the global market.

Based on the upgraded MEB+ platform, the ID. Tiguan blends the established practicality of the Tiguan moniker with cutting-edge electric performance and a less frumpy exterior than its predecessors. With up to 600 km range, 299 kW power, and a more mainstream SUV-style design, the ID. Tiguan is set to become one of Volkswagen Group’s most critical EVs in the coming years.

The European pre-orders for the ID. TIGUAN open on October 13, 2026, with worldwide deliveries commencing in 2027. The ID. Tiguan is also set to arrive in India, but Volkswagen has yet to comment on the launch date.

The ID. Tiguan features three variants, with a choice between entry-level range, power, and long-range, all-wheel-drive powertrain. The entry-level variant features a 58 kWh battery, 190 PS motor, rear-wheel drive, 500 km range, and 1,800 kg towing capacity. The mid-range model offers a 286 PS powertrain, 77 kWh battery, rear-wheel drive, 600 km range, and 2,000 kg towing capacity. The high-power 299 PS 4MOTION AWD version can deliver up to 580 km on a single charge and 2,000 kg towing capacity. Unlike the previous ID.4 and ID.5, the ID. Tiguan’s performance is enhanced due to more efficient motor, battery thermal management, and better aerodynamics on the MEB+ platform.

The 299 PS 4MOTION AWD powertrain is the most powerful of the bunch and can offer the best performance. It has a slightly reduced range to offer, but it makes up for it with tremendous off-road capabilities, and a higher towing capacity.

Design: More SUV, less crossover

Compared to the ID.4 and ID.5, the ID. Tiguan features a more upright and less crossover-style exterior. With a squared-off front-end and prominent bonnet, the ID. Tiguan looks more like an SUV than the current ID.4 and ID.5 electric cars. The front fascia features a closed-off design with an illuminated VW logo while the full LED headlights add some visual appeal. The ID. Tiguan is available with 18 to 20-inch wheels and a panoramic sunroof on upper trims. It is also bigger than the rival ID.4, which translates to a more spacious cabin and a bigger boot.

The ID. Tiguan offers 534 L of boot space, and 32 L of storage space in the front for storing charging equipment and personal belongings.

Interior: Triple screens and physical buttons

The ID. Tiguan features one of the most extensive interior setups, including a triple-screen media system. The ID. Tiguan features a 15-inch central touchscreen, 10-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 12-inch screen for the front passenger. The interior also features physical buttons for essential controls, including the climate control and volume knob – a welcome upgrade over the completely touch-centric interface of the previous ID.4 and ID.5 models.

Volkswagen also offers heated and ventilated front seats with massage function, Harman/Kardon premium audio system, wireless smartphone charging, digital key, and vehicle-to-load power transfer. The last feature enables the car to supply electricity to connected devices and equipment.

Advanced Safety and Driver-Assistance Systems

The ID. Tiguan features a complete set of driver-assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, automated emergency braking, and traffic-sign recognition. The ID. Tiguan also features a rear-wheel steering system for improved parking maneuverability and highway overtaking. Especially the latter function is crucial for a large car that measures over 4.7 meters from bumper to bumper.

Price and availability

In Europe, the ID. Tiguan starts at €42,695, or Rs. 42 lakh before taxes and duties. The high-performance 299 PS 4MOTION version is set to cost significantly more.

The Volkswagen ID. Tiguan is set to arrive in India before the end of 2027 or early 2028. If it is imported as a CBU, the Volkswagen ID. Tiguan will cost anywhere between Rs. 60-70 lakh ex-showroom. If it is locally assembled, it will cost less, but Volkswagen has yet to announce the ID. Tiguan’s India debut.

Competitors

The Volkswagen ID. Tiguan will directly compete against the Tesla Model Y, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and BYD Seal. Compared to the rivals, the ID. Tiguan offers a more traditional SUV design, a larger boot, and a triple-screen interior with physical buttons. It also offers more range and towing capacity than most of the rivals. For Indian buyers, who are not fond of the more ‘frumpy’ ID.4 and ID.5 design, the ID. Tiguan can be one of the most desirable electric SUVs on the market.
