Tata Motors have partnered with Amazon to deploy 3,000 electric trucks in Amazon’s transport network in India.
Starting with Tata Ultra E.7 electric trucks in Delhi, it will roll out to major freight routes across the country, including the 2800km Delhi-Bengaluru-Chennai route on the NH48.
Largest E-Truck Deployment By An E-Commerce Company In India
Amazon says it marks the largest deployment of electric trucks by an e-commerce company in India. The first batch of Tata Ultra E.7s were flagged off on October 27th 2026 in Delhi by Union Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy.
These trucks will be used to move customer goods within the middle-mile. Helping electrify a far greater proportion of Amazon’s transport network.
Trucks will be supplied by Tata Motors but will be owned and operated by Amazon carrier partners.
There will be a progressive rollout of the trucks over the next three years. Starting with the festive period.

Detail
Total Number Of Electric Trucks 3000
Time Frame For Deployment 3 Years
Starting City Delhi
Truck Type Tata Ultra E.7
Main Use Middle Mile Freight
Major Route Delhi-Bengaluru-Chennai (NH48)
Light & Medium Duty Trucks
The initial trucks being deployed are light and medium duty Tata Ultra E.7’s. These have been developed for urban and regional transportation due to the predictability of routes and frequent stops.
The trucks benefit from an integrated electric axle, fast charging CCS2 ports, regenerative breaking and high voltage protection. The cab has been crash tested.
The trucks have been designed to help cut costs and increase reliability. This is key for fleet operators to ensure they see cost savings from lower energy and maintenance costs.
Roll Out To Longest Freight Route In India
Moving on from urban areas, Tata and Amazon will electrify the 2800km route between Delhi-Bengaluru-Chennai, on the NH48 route. Passing through seven states and connecting six major e-commerce regions.
This is a big step forward as the trucks will need to have longer ranges, fast charging and reliable infrastructure. In the next phase Amazon plan to deploy larger trucks on routes like Delhi-Bengaluru and Bengaluru-Chennai, says Abhinav Singh, Vice President Of Operations.
Fast Charging Will Be Key
Without fast and reliable charging, there is little point to having any electric trucks. Amazon have partnered with Yahhvi who have created 10 charging yards for Amazon in India.
New charging hubs will be created across the major freight routes. Tata Motors will also supply charging, servicing and support.
This will be critical to the success of the project. As well as having reliable trucks, the trucks will need to have good uptime, access to chargers and quick turn around times.
Why It Is Important For India
The logistics industry in India is heavily reliant on diesel powered trucks which causes major air pollution in cities and creates large amounts of green house gases. By moving to electric freight for commercial use, we will see emissions from the tail pipe reduced, less noise pollution and lower costs due to the lack of fuel needed.
While we have seen some great progress in electric cars and two wheelers, it is just as important to move the commercial sector to electric. As our economy grows, there will be an increased demand for freight and energy efficient logistics will be key, said Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy.
A Major Win For Tata Motors
This is a great win for Tata Motors, who are the leading commercial vehicle manufacturer in India. They saw 26% year on year growth in wholesale of commercial vehicles in the June 2026 quarter.
“We have several such partnerships. But the revenue will depend on what the final product mix is. We could explore long haul truck deployment with them,” said Rajesh Kaul, Vice President & Business Head Of Trucks.
Potential Issues
Although the announcement is large, it will ultimately depend on how it goes. The success of the programme will rely on fast charging, truck uptime, battery performance, route planning and whether the carrier partners are seeing the economic benefits.
No information has been given about pricing, timing and revenue. Due to the trucks being the base version for middle mile delivery, Tata Motors say it is difficult to predict how much revenue they will see.
This partnership between Tata Motors and Amazon is one of the biggest announcements in the electric commercial vehicle space in India. With 3000 electric trucks being deployed, it could lead to e-commerce freight moving to more than just last mile delivery to show that electric trucks can be used at scale on Indian roads.
If the trucks are successfully rolled out in Delhi and expanded to the NH48 route, this could set a precedent for the future of electric freight in India.
