Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker, is set to unleash its next big hit, and it’s not an SUV.
According to multiple industry reports and spy shots, the automaker’s next big launch after the e-Vitara will be an all-electric MPV, internally codenamed YMC. Expected to debut by late 2026 or early 2027, the vehicle aims to electrify the family car segment before any other competitor.
The YMC Project: An Electric MPV Based On The e-Vitara
The electric MPV will share the same Heartect-e platform that underpins the recently launched e-Vitara. The skateboard style platform is set to revolutionize the MPV segment, where the battery layout has been a conundrum for manufacturers. Unlike petrol or CNG MPVs (Ertiga or XL6), the battery in an electric MPV can encroach into the boot or cabin space.
The Electric MPV is likely to have the following specifications:
Seating Capacity: 7-seater (or 6-seater captain chair variants)
Battery Packs: It is likely to carry over the 49 kWh and 61 kWh battery packs from the e-Vitara.
Range: The vehicle is likely to offer a range of 400-500 km on a full tank of battery (on the larger battery pack).
Layout: Unlike the front-wheel-drive e-Vitara, the MPV is rumored to have a Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) layout.
Length: It is likely to be around 4.5 m long, making it a bit longer than the Ertiga to accommodate the third row comfortably without sacrificing boot space.
Why an Electric MPV? The Untapped Market
The MPV segment in India is dominated by petrol and CNG cars like the Maruti Ertiga, XL6, Toyota Innova Hycross, and Kia Carens. While the Innova has a hybrid option, there is no fully electric MPV available below ₹30 lakh. Families are the perfect demographic for EVs as they typically have a fixed route (school drop, office commutes, and grocery shopping), and they often have a second car for long trips. An electric MPV offers them zero-emission city driving with 7 seats in a family sedan, or 6-seater captain chair variants. Moreover, the running cost of the vehicle would be a fraction of that of a petrol Innova, making it ideal for fleet operators and large families alike.
Design and Features: Premium Family Hauler
The spy shots suggest that the YMC will share significant design DNA with the e-Vitara. The vehicle is likely to have the same sharp, futuristic front fascia and sleek LED headlamps. The rear will be stretched to give a more upright, boxy silhouette typical of MPVs, maximizing the headroom and boot space.

Pricing and Competition
The Maruti electric MPV is likely to be priced between ₹18 lakh and ₹24 lakh (ex-showroom). The price point is perfect for the vehicle to occupy the sweet spot between the Mahindra BE 6e (or 7-seater variant if it arrives) and the Kia Carens Clavis EV. Furthermore, the vehicle will indirectly compete with the lower variants of the Toyota Innova Hycross, offering a much lower running cost alternative.
By virtue of being assembled in its Gujarat plant (where the e-Vitara is assembled), Maruti can ensure that the electric MPV’s cost remains competitive. Maruti’s Battery as a Service (BaaS) mode, similar to the e-Vitara model, can also reduce the vehicle’s purchase price, making it more accessible to a discerning buyer.
The Strategic Bigger Picture
This launch is a part of Maruti Suzuki’s ambitious plan to introduce 5 EVs by 2031. Having successfully positioned an electric SUV (e-Vitara), Maruti is now targeting the MPV segment, where it has the best understanding of the Indian family needs. It also paves the way for Maruti to introduce a small electric hatchback (codenamed e-WX) expected around 2027 to tackle the Tata Tiago.ev.
The Maruti Suzuki Electric MPV (YMC) is set to be a segment-defining vehicle.
