11 Years, 2 Generations, 5 Powertrains & A Record That Could Make Maruti Suzuki NERVOUS!
Hyundai Creta has crossed 15 Lakh sales in India, making it the best-selling midsize SUV in the country. The model has registered 15,12,036 cars since its launch in July 2015. In FY26, the Creta had its best year with 2,01,921 units sold, which is the first year for the model to cross two Lakh sales.
The Creta has seen two generations of development, the launch of N Line and Electric variants, and evolved from a petrol-diesel SUV to a five-powertrain range. The next-generation Creta is expected to launch next year with a strong hybrid powertrain.
From 2015 Launch to 15 Lakh Sales
Hyundai launched the first-gen Creta in India on 21 st July 2015 with 1.6L petrol, 1.4L and 1.6L diesel engines. The Creta’s appeal was driven by its SUV design, higher seating position, and availability with automatic transmission.
Diesel engines with longer torque, loads of features, and smaller exterior dimensions than its rivals made the Creta stand out as a small SUV alternative to bigger cars.

The second-gen model also saw the introduction of a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, connected car technology, and a wider range of automatic transmissions. The second-gen Creta was launched in a challenging industry environment, but it managed to record more than 1.5 Lakh sales in FY23.
2024 Facelift: Two Screens, ADAS
A significant facelift of the Creta was launched in January 2024 with a redesigned front grille, connected LED headlights, new bumpers, and a revised dashboard.
The facelift also introduced:
Two 10.25-inch displays
Ventilated front seats

Level 2 ADAS on select trims
New 1.5L turbo petrol engine
7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission
The new displays are positioned at the front and center of the dashboard making the interior look luxurious and modern. The Creta now has a diverse engine range with the 1.4L turbo-petrol engine, in addition to the 1.2L and 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol and diesel engines.
Creta N Line: Sportier Alternative
Hyundai unveiled the Creta N Line in March 2024 with sportier exterior design and a sportier interior, along with a revised suspension setup. The N Line trim includes sportier front fascia, N Line-specific badging, revised suspension, and sportier seats with red accents.
The Creta N Line offers more choice in terms of the sporty sedan, complementing the existing petrol, diesel, and turbo petrol variants.
Creta Electric: All-electric Derivative
Hyundai Creta Electric was launched in early 2025 as the all-electric version of the Creta. It has 42kWh and 51.4kWh battery packs with ARAI-certified ranges of 420km and 510km, respectively.

The long-range variant can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 7.9 sec. The car’s highlight features include twin 10.25-inch displays, regenerative braking, Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), and Level 2 ADAS.

Why Creta Has Been A Success?
Some reasons for the Creta’s success are:
Petrol engines satisfy the conservative buyers.
Diesel engines have a higher torque for towing and commuting on highways.
Turbo petrol has high power delivery and 7-speed DCT for quick acceleration.
The provision of manual and automatic variants in the petrol, diesel, and turbo petrol classes.
The car has a panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, infotainment system, and ADAS features to compete with its rivals.
The evolution process of the Creta speaks for itself as the volumes jumped from 1,18,092 units in FY2022 to 1,94,871 units in FY2025, which is a 65% increase over three years.
FY26: First Year Above 2 Lakh
FY26 will be the first year for the Creta to register more than 2 Lakh sales as it recorded 2,01,921 units sold in FY26. The Creta already registered 89,727 units sold in the ongoing FY27.
This indicates that the Creta’s sales volumes are bound to increase further as the new hybrid powertrain, next-gen Creta, and the Creta Electric continue to gather momentum.
Next Gen Creta: Strong Hybrid To Follow
The next-gen Creta is expected to launch next year with a strong hybrid powertrain. This will complement the existing petrol, diesel, turbo petrol, and electric powertrains, giving the Creta a total of five powertrains. A strong hybrid Creta will challenge the likes of Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Hybrid and Toyota Hyryder Hybrid.
It will also allow the Creta to meet the demand for fuel-efficient vehicles while doing away with the need for a charging station.
Competitors
The Creta competes against Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Kia Seltos, Tata Curvv, Honda Elevate, Skoda Kushaq, and Volkswagen Taigun. The Creta’s primary strengths include broader powertrain choice, features, and reliability. The introduction of the Creta N Line and Creta Electric further bolster the choice on offer.
The success of the Hyundai Creta is unquestionable as it has been able to sell 15 Lakh units in 11 years in India. It has continually evolved to remain at the top of the pack by introducing new powertrains and features. The Creta Electric has gathered significant pace and is in line to become a best-seller in the all-electric segment. The next-gen Creta with a hybrid powertrain is also expected to be a hit. This makes the Creta the most important model in Hyundai’s India portfolio and the 15 Lakh sales figure a fitting milestone.
