December 1 Global Debut, 500 Nm Mild-Hybrid Diesel, ADAS & A Design That Could Make Mahindra Scorpio-N Look OUTDATED!

Toyota is set to unveil the next-gen Fortuner globally on December 1, 2026, with the SUV expecting to launch in India in 2027. The new Fortuner will continue on the proven IMV ladder-frame platform but will see significant sheet-metal changes, a redesigned interior and expanded safety technology.

The biggest mechanical update is expected to be the 2.8-litre diesel with 48V mild-hybrid technology developing 204 hp and 500 Nm of torque, making the new Fortuner more efficient and responsive, especially in city driving and stop-and-go traffic.

Global Debut on December 1

Toyota has confirmed that the next-gen Fortuner will make its global premiere on December 1, 2026. The SUV is expected to arrive in India in 2027, though an exact launch date has not been confirmed.

The current Fortuner has been on sale since 2015, making it one of the longest-running models in Toyota’s Indian line-up. The new generation will bring the SUV up to date with modern design, technology and safety standards.

Design: Evolution, Not Revolution

The new Fortuner will retain the IMV ladder-frame platform and bodyshell but will see multiple sheet-metal changes to incorporate Toyota’s latest design language.

Expected design changes:

New front grille and bumper

Revised LED headlamps and DRLs

Updated tail lamps

New alloy wheel designs

Revised rear bumper

More modern, aggressive stance

The overall silhouette will remain familiar, as the ladder-frame construction and body-on-frame layout continue. However, the updated styling should give the Fortuner a fresher, more contemporary look.

Interior: Bigger Screens and Better Materials

Inside, the new Fortuner is expected to get a significantly upgraded cabin with modern technology and improved materials.

Interior highlights:

Larger central touchscreen infotainment system

Wireless smartphone connectivity

Fully digital instrument cluster

Improved dashboard materials

Revised ergonomics

Power-adjustable front seats

Premium sound system

Sunroof

Electronic park brake

The 12.3-inch floating touchscreen and digital instrument cluster are expected to bring the Fortuner’s cabin in line with modern SUVs. The electronic park brake replaces the traditional handbrake, freeing up the centre console space.

Safety: Toyota Safety Sense ADAS

One of the biggest upgrades could be the addition of Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), the brand’s advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) suite. The new Fortuner is expected to get radar and camera-based ADAS technology.

Expected ADAS features:

Autonomous emergency braking

Adaptive cruise control

Lane-keeping assist

Blind-spot monitoring

360-degree surround view camera

Tyre pressure monitoring system

Front and rear parking sensors

Multiple airbags

Electronic Stability Control (ESC)

The radar and camera-based ADAS is a major upgrade over the current Fortuner, which lacks comprehensive active safety features. This will make the new Fortuner much safer for highway and city driving.

Powertrain: 2.8L Diesel Mild-Hybrid with 500 Nm

The new Fortuner is expected to retain the current 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine, now paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system.

Powertrain Output Torque Transmission

2.8L turbo-diesel + 48V mild-hybrid 204 hp 500 Nm 6MT / 6AT

2.7L NA petrol 164 hp 245 Nm 6AT

2.8L diesel (non-hybrid) 201 hp 500 Nm 5MT / 6MT / 6AT

The 48V mild-hybrid system assists during acceleration and improves efficiency in stop-and-go traffic, making the diesel Fortuner more responsive and fuel-efficient.

Toyota could also reintroduce the 2.7-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine for buyers who want a rugged petrol-powered SUV. This engine develops 164 hp and 245 Nm, paired with a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Drivetrain: RWD and 4WD Options

Both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) configurations are expected to continue, with the 4WD version only available with the diesel engine.

Drivetrain highlights:

6-speed manual and 6-speed torque-converter automatic

Electric power steering

4×4 drivetrain (diesel only)

Terrain modes

Rear-differential lock

The terrain modes and rear-differential lock will help the Fortuner maintain its off-road capability, which is a key selling point for the SUV.
