Maruti Suzuki has achieved a major milestone.

By exporting more than 50,000 cumulative e Vitara units since it started supplying them to international markets in August 2025.

The e Vitara is Maruti’s first battery electric vehicle to be sold globally.

Major EV Export Milestone

50,000 units is a major milestone for the company to hit in such a short amount of time since production started at Maruti’s Hansalpur plant in Gujarat. The e Vitara is not only an Indian focused car but is also Maruti’s first battery electric SUV made globally.

Between April – September 2026, Maruti supplied close to 93% of all electric passenger vehicles exports from India. This makes the e Vitara the main player in India’s EV export market.

It also topped the charts as the leading passenger EV exporter from India in FY2025-26.

Hansalpur – EV Hub

The e Vitara is produced solely at Maruti’s Hansalpur Plant in Gujarat. Recently the plant has had its production capacity raised to 10 lakh units per year, making it the first Suzuki plant in the world to achieve this level of production.

This means the e Vitara is produced at Hansalpur for both domestic and international markets. The plant has grown very fast in recent years with almost half of Maruti’s total international exports coming from the plant in Gujarat in FY26.

Maruti has invested a total of ₹25,288.7 crore into the Hansalpur plant. This recent increase in production will help position the plant well in Maruti’s global production. It will also allow them to increase their production of EVs as they see growing demand internationally.

Export Markets

The first region to receive the e Vitara was Europe. It is still the largest global export market. Maruti are now exporting the e Vitara to close to 50 countries.

The main export markets are the UK, Norway, Germany, Japan and Switzerland. This shows that the e Vitara has been developed with mature EV markets in mind. Safety, build quality, range and after-sales will all be a major consideration.

One country that stands out is Norway. This is one of the most EV focussed markets in the world. This shows that they are positioning the e Vitara as not only an affordable EV SUV but one that can compete on a global scale.

Maruti’s Export Success

This follows Maruti’s long running export success with them being the top passenger vehicle exporter from India for 5 years.

In the first half of this financial year they have supplied over 50% of all passenger vehicles shipped from India. Maruti now have 16 models to export to almost 120 countries.

This puts Maruti in a strong position for the future as they are not a primarily domestic focussed brand. They have a great foundation of exporting, dealer networks and production size to increase their EV volumes quickly.

Importance of the e Vitara

The e Vitara is Maruti’s first serious global EV. It is a major step in Maruti’s electrification journey. It allows them to supply a battery electric SUV to markets looking to reduce emissions with increasing consumer demand.

For India it shows that we are now able to produce globally competitive EVs. The e Vitara has helped boost the Make in India message with it being exported. This shows that we have the capability to produce advanced EVs from our plants.

The success of the SUV could mean that Maruti will look to increase their range quicker. The e Vitara has seen great success in Europe and Asia and this may mean they want to add more Indian built EV models.

Future

Overall hitting the 50,000EV mark is a great early milestone. However with more global brands bringing out electric SUVs the challenge will be keeping up. However the increase in production capacity at Hansalpur means they are able to. With almost 50 countries exporting to and holding a large percentage of EV exports from India the e Vitara has given them a solid base.

If they can keep up the e Vitara could be one of the most successful vehicles exported from India. It would be a major symbol of India’s growing importance in the global EV supply chain.
