It looks like Tata Motors is almost ready to launch their new electric vehicle, the Tata Safari EV, their first 3-row electric SUV.
The Safari EV is expected to be unveiled around November 2026 and is likely to hit the market in early 2027. Despite Tata not officially confirming any specifics, the new Safari EV will have the same great family friendly SUV characteristics but with an electric powertrain and cutting edge tech.
Launch
The Safari EV is likely to be unveiled first (possibly November 2026) and will be expected to be launched in early 2027. Some sources say it will be launched during the festive period in 2026 and others suggest it will be launched closer to the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in early 2027.
If it launches during these periods then the Safari EV will be Tata’s first true 3-row electric SUV. This is important as the electric SUV sector in India has centred around compact and mid sized vehicles. Giving Tata a whole new premium segment to compete in by launching a 7-Seater electric family SUV.
Platform
The Safari EV is expected to run on the same acti.ev+ platform as the Tata Harrier EV. The platform can support varying battery sizes, different powertrains and high voltage charging. This means Tata can offer various variants of the Safari EV.
Being the expected flagship of Tata’s electric range, the Safari EV will be above the Nexon EV, Curvv EV and Harrier EV. It will be offered in both a 6-seater and 7-seater variant, ideal for big families and long journeys on the motorway. The SUV will have no combustion engine so will be perfect for those looking for a practical SUV.
Range / Battery / Fast Charging
The most exciting thing to look out for with this vehicle will be the range. The Safari EV is widely expected to come with a 65kWh and 75kWh battery similar to the Harrier EV. Some sources say that it may come with a larger battery size of 80kWh on the top trims.
Expected battery and range specs:
65kWh battery – Likely to be the city and intercity option with an expected range of around 420-450 km.
75kWh battery – Expected to have a claimed range of over 500 km with some claiming over 600km.
80kWh battery – May be offered on the flagship version of the Safari EV, giving it the longest range of Tata’s EV range.
Fast Charging – The vehicle should offer DC fast charging that can charge from 10%-80% in under 45 minutes.
The actual range will depend on the battery size used, how many motors there are, wheel sizes and real world driving. The range claims may not match up to what you get in real life due to having a full 3-row SUV and using the aircon.
Powertrain
The Safari EV is expected to come with both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options. The single motor RWD version will likely be the cheaper and more efficient option whereas the dual motor AWD option will offer more performance.
If Tata use the same components as the Harrier EV then the RWD version will offer around 238 PS and 315 Nm. The AWD version will likely offer a front and rear motor with much greater performance. These stats are not confirmed for the Safari EV but do indicate that Tata are aiming to make the SUV a very powerful electric vehicle. Rather than just an electric version of their current Safari.

Design
The Safari EV is likely to have the same bold and boxy design as the normal Safari, however it should have some EV specific design tweaks.
Likely design changes:
Sealed grille for better aerodynamics.
New bumper front and rear.
New alloy wheels.
EV badges.
New colour options.
Overall the design will be evolutionary rather than revolutionary. They will likely want to keep the vehicle looking like a Safari EV but will include more clean lines, blue accents and EV specific features to show it is zero emission.
Interior
The interior will have a similar layout to the ICE version but will be more tech focused. Spy reports suggest it will have a triple screen setup with a touchscreen for the front passenger. The screen could offer navigation, entertainment and vehicle controls.
Expected comfort and tech features:
Air vents on the front seats.
Panoramic roof.
Dual climate control.
Electric tailgate.
Wireless phone charging.
Smart car tech.
Premium sound system.
This could also include a 540-degree camera system, automatic parking, summon, multiple terrain modes and an upgraded level 2 ADAS system. This will really help it stand out as a premium family SUV.
Safety / ADAS
The safety aspect will be a key part of the vehicle. It is likely to come with a level 2 ADAS system offering features such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning and reverse cross traffic alert.
The vehicle will also likely include a 360/540-degree camera, multiple airbags, ESC and all the safety features we know Tata will include. As the Safari has always been seen as a family orientated SUV they will likely push the safety features hard.
Price and Competition
The Safari EV is expected to cost between ₹20 Lakh and ₹32 Lakh depending on the variant, battery and powertrain. Some are expecting it to start from around ₹22.5 Lakh. The top AWD long range variants could push close to ₹32 Lakh.
The main competitors will be the Mahindra XEV 9S and MG Hector Tomahawk EV. The benefits of the Safari EV could be that Tata are creating an expanding EV range, it offers many different powertrains, will offer a great range and will be practical with 6/7 seats.
Expectations
The Tata Safari EV could be one of the most important EVs to launch in India in the upcoming months. Not only will it add another EV to their range but will see if Indian customers are ready for a large premium 3-row family SUV.
If Tata can offer a vehicle with great range, quick charging, AWD, modern tech and affordable prices then it could become a great alternative to traditional large SUVs. However until they release the official spec, all battery sizes, ranges, performance and pricing is just an expectation.
