Mitsubishi has finally revived one of its iconic SUV names with the launch of the fifth-generation Pajero in a global unveiling on September 2, 2026. The latest iteration of the Pajero is designed as a true off-roader with a ladder frame chassis, 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine developing 480 Nm of torque, 8-speed automatic transmission, Super Select 4WD-II with S-AWC and a three-row 7-seater setup.
Platform and off-road capability
The fifth-generation Pajero comes on a high-strength ladder-frame platform similar to that of the Triton pickup but with SUV-specific suspension and cabin development. This increases the rigidity and durability of the vehicle on rough surfaces, just like older Pajeros were known for during Dakar rally wins.
A confirmation of Super Select 4WD-II transfer case with S-AWC (Super All-Wheel Control) system has been made, which integrates the management of torque distribution, braking force and vehicle stability. Modes of driving include Normal, Eco, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand and Rock for different surfaces.
Ground clearance is quoted at 230 mm on 20-inch tyre variants; approach, ramp breakover and departure angles are 30.4°, 22.6° and 25.8° respectively figures that show this SUV is a serious off-roader in angles and articulation, not just looks.
Engine, powertrain and performance
Mitsubishi has confirmed that initial markets will get the Pajero as an internal-combustion (ICE) model; hybrids and plug-in hybrids are in development but not arriving immediately. The powertrain is a 2.4-litre “clean diesel” turbo four, developed specifically for the Pajero.
Output varies slightly by market and grade: some specifications list 150 kW (around 201 hp) and up to 480 Nm of torque, while other variants show 470 Nm. It is paired with a new 8-speed automatic with a sport mode, tuned for both highway cruising and low-range off-roading.
If this SUV comes to India in the future, the 2.4L diesel could be a balanced option from a taxation, mileage and running-cost perspective, provided Mitsubishi tunes it to meet BS6 Phase 2 or upcoming emission norms.

Interior, features and 7-seat layout
The Pajero is positioned as a premium flagship SUV, so the cabin blends luxury and tech. The dashboard carries a digital evolution of the classic “Triple Multi Meter” as a 14.3-inch screen widget mixing nostalgia with modernity.
The seating layout is three rows with space for seven. The second row slides up to 150 mm (5.9 inches) and uses a tumble mechanism to improve third-row access and cargo flexibility. Higher grades are reported to offer semi-aniline leather upholstery, ventilated seats, wireless smartphone charging and dedicated 4WD controls.
On driver assistance and safety, an advanced ADAS package, multiple airbags, a 360° camera and off-road-specific displays/alerts can be expected, though the India-specific feature list will only be clear at launch.
Dimensions and practicality
The all-new Pajero measures 4920 mm in length, 1925 mm in width and has a 2870 mm wheelbase numbers that suggest a good balance between cabin space, especially the third row, and boot practicality. Despite the ladder-frame, work has been done on suspension tuning and seat ergonomics to keep highway ride comfort and city usability intact.
India launch status
Mitsubishi has not officially confirmed an India launch for the new Pajero yet. Whether and when it arrives here will depend on the brand’s passenger-vehicle network strategy and future plans for the Indian market. Initial launches in Asian markets are expected around early 2027; Australia is targeting arrival within FY2026 (by March 2027).
Rivals and expectations
If launched in India, the Pajero would rival the Toyota Fortuner, Isuzu MU-X and future ladder-frame premium SUVs. With up to 480 Nm of torque, S-AWC and a 7-seat package, it can appeal to both family touring and weekend off-roading provided pricing, maintenance and dealer network suit Indian buyers.
