Yamaha has launched the YZF-R2 in India, introducing three variants in its supersport lineup. The starting price of the YZF-R2 is ₹2,30,500 for the standard R2, whereas the Quick Shifter variant costs ₹2,39,500. The top variant R2M has been priced at ₹2,53,000. All prices are ex-showroom.
It comes above the R15 V4, and is the most premium entry point into the supersport category in Yamaha’s R family. It has an all-new engine and lightweight chassis and electronics usually available in large-capacity motorcycles from Yamaha’s R family.
204cc Engine Delivering 26.5PS
The Yamaha R2 uses a brand new 204cc, liquid cooled, four-valve, DOHC single-cylinder engine. It develops 26.5PS at 10,000rpm and 19.1Nm at 8,000rpm.
This engine comes with an electronically controlled throttle, finger rocker-arm valve system and an 11.5:1 compression ratio. Yamaha has equipped the engine with a mirror-finished DiASil cylinder, reducing friction and efficiency.
Some of the other technical aspects of this engine include semi-dry sump lubrication and an assist-and-slipper clutch. While the assist mechanism reduces clutch lever effort, the slipper mechanism prevents rear wheel hop during aggressive downshifts.
For the rider, Yamaha has tuned the airbox and exhaust to get a sporty intake and exhaust note. The company claims that this engine has been developed to offer mid-range power and high-rev nature typical of supersport motorcycles.
The rider gets to choose from the Street, Sport and Rain presets through Yamaha Riding Control. In addition, there is the Custom mode allowing you to alter the throttle response, traction control and quickshifter settings.
Chassis & Hardware
The R2 has been equipped with a newly developed high tensile steel diamond frame and pivot-mounted aluminum die-cast swingarm. According to the manufacturer, the frame is 2.8kg lighter than that of the R15 while maintaining the stiffness needed for supersport motorcycle.
The wet weight of the R2 is 149kg, delivering a claimed power-to-weight ratio of 5.62kg/PS. It has an 810mm seat height, 1,340mm wheelbase, 24.5-degree caster angle, 103mm trail and 20mm front fork offset.

he braking system uses a radially mounted four-piston front calliper and 282mm floating disc. At the rear, you have a single-piston calliper and 220mm disc.
As far as suspension is concerned, the motorcycle gets USD forks at the front and a monoshock at the rear. The R2M variant gets adjustable front preload, adjustable rear preload and five-position adjustable clutch and brake levers.
Five-Inch TFT Display and Connected Features
The R2 gets a five-inch colour TFT instrument display with turn-by-turn navigation and Yamaha Y-Connect smartphone connectivity. The system allows riders to access call alerts, message notifications, music controls and other connected functions.
The TFT display provides key information such as speed, engine rpm, gear position, fuel level, trip data and riding mode. The clear layout and bright screen make it easy to read in different lighting conditions.
LED lighting is standard across the range. The R2 features a compact headlamp unit, LED position lamps and a slim LED tail lamp. The overall design retains the aggressive styling associated with Yamaha’s R-series motorcycles.
Three Variants with Distinct Features
Yamaha is offering the R2 in three variants: R2, R2 QS and R2M. Each version has different equipment levels, colours and hardware.
The standard R2 uses black wheels, a mechanical key and conventional suspension settings. It is available in Dark Bluish Gray and Metallic Black. This variant is aimed at buyers who want the core R2 experience without additional electronics or premium hardware.
The R2 QS adds an up-and-down quickshifter, allowing riders to shift gears without using the clutch lever. This variant is offered in Racing Blue and Matte White Pearl. The quickshifter can make riding more engaging and reduce rider fatigue during spirited riding.
The top-spec R2M is offered exclusively in Metallic Gray. It gets blue wheels, a raised 3D emblem, faux-suede seat, silver swingarm, shot-blasted exhaust end cap and engraved fork caps. It also features a smart key, adjustable front preload, adjustable rear preload and five-position adjustable clutch and brake levers.
The R2M is designed for riders who want a more premium appearance and greater adjustability. The smart key allows keyless operation, while the adjustable components enable riders to tailor the motorcycle’s setup to their weight and riding style.
Positioning and Competition
The Yamaha R2 is positioned above the R15 V4 in the company’s supersport line-up. It is expected to compete with motorcycles such as the KTM RC 200, Bajaj Pulsar RS200 and other sporty 200cc-class motorcycles.
With 26.5PS, a lightweight chassis, USD forks, radial front brakes and a quickshifter option, the R2 offers several features that are uncommon in this segment. Its electronics package, including traction control and riding modes, also gives it a technological advantage over many rivals.
The R2’s pricing places it in a competitive position. The standard variant undercuts several 200cc sportbikes, while the R2M offers premium features at a price that remains below larger-capacity supersports.
Yamaha’s decision to offer three variants allows buyers to choose between affordability, convenience and premium equipment. The standard R2 will appeal to budget-conscious buyers, the R2 QS to riders who value quickshifter technology, and the R2M to customers seeking a more exclusive and adjustable motorcycle.
With its new engine, lightweight chassis, advanced electronics and distinctive R-series styling, the Yamaha YZF-R2 aims to strengthen the company’s presence in India’s entry-level supersport segment.
