Maruti Suzuki has wrapped up FY26 with its best-ever performance. The country’s largest carmaker sold 24.22 lakh vehicles in the financial year ending March 2026 – a new record. Domestic sales stood at 19.75 lakh units, while exports crossed 4.47 lakh units, both all-time highs.
But here’s the bigger story: Maruti isn’t slowing down. The company just announced it’s launching seven new SUVs over the next five years. That’s a massive push into the segment that’s driving India’s car market right now.
FY26: A Record-Breaking Year
Let’s talk numbers. Maruti sold 24,22,713 units in FY26, up 8.4% from the 22,34,266 units it moved in FY25. Domestic passenger vehicle sales hit 18.23 lakh units, while light commercial vehicles added another 38,575 units.
Exports were the real standout. At 4.47 lakh units, they jumped 34% from last year’s 3.32 lakh units. This marks the third consecutive year Maruti has crossed the 20 lakh annual sales mark – something no other carmaker in India has managed.
Seven models individually crossed 1.5 lakh units each in FY26: the Dzire, Ertiga, Swift, WagonR, Brezza, Baleno, and Fronx. The Dzire was the biggest winner, with sales surging 38.8% to 2.29 lakh units.
The SUV Push: 7 New Models in 5 Years
Now, here’s where things get interesting. Hisashi Takeuchi, Maruti’s Managing Director and CEO, just confirmed the company will introduce seven new SUVs over the next five years.
This isn’t just about filling gaps in the lineup. It’s a strategic shift. Maruti knows the Indian market is moving hard towards SUVs, and it needs to keep pace. The company already boosted its SUV portfolio in FY26 with the Victoris and the e Vitara – its first battery electric vehicle.
The seven upcoming SUVs will include facelifts, hybrid variants, and fully electric models across different size segments. Maruti hasn’t revealed names or launch dates yet, but the plan is clear: strengthen its SUV presence at every price point.

Why This Matters
Maruti’s dominance in hatchbacks and sedans is well-known. But the SUV wave has been changing the game. Competitors like Hyundai, Kia, and Tata have been aggressive in this space. Maruti’s Brezza and Fronx have done well, but the company knows it needs more firepower.
Seven new SUVs in five years means roughly one new or updated SUV every 8-9 months. That’s a rapid rollout. It also signals Maruti’s confidence in the SUV segment’s growth trajectory.
Capacity Expansion to Match Demand
Record sales mean record demand. And record demand means Maruti needs more production capacity. The company is adding 5 lakh units of annual manufacturing capacity to handle the expected growth.
This expansion comes on top of already running production at full tilt. FY26 saw Maruti produce 23.4 lakh units – close to its existing capacity limits. The new capacity will ensure it can meet both domestic and export demand without bottlenecks.
The Pending Orders Problem
Here’s something most people miss: despite selling 24 lakh-plus vehicles, Maruti still has a backlog. At the end of FY26, the company had around 1.9 lakh pending orders.
That’s nearly two months’ worth of sales sitting in the pipeline. It shows demand is stronger than even Maruti anticipated. The capacity expansion should help clear this backlog over time.
What Buyers Can Expect
If you’re planning to buy a Maruti, here’s what this means:
-
More SUV choices across different budgets over the next five years
-
Hybrid and electric options will expand beyond the e Vitara
-
Waiting periods may ease as capacity increases
-
Exports growth means Maruti’s global reputation is strengthening, which usually translates to better quality and reliability
Maruti Suzuki’s FY26 performance proves one thing: it’s not resting on its laurels. Record sales, record exports, and a massive SUV push show a company that’s playing for the long term.
The seven new SUVs will be the real test. If Maruti can replicate its hatchback success in the SUV space, competitors have serious reason to worry.
For now, though, Maruti has every reason to celebrate. FY26 was a year to remember – and the next five years look even bigger.
