How EV battery warranties work in India

Most mainstream EVs sold in India carry a separate warranty for the battery as well as the motor. So while a standard warranty for the car is typically 5 years or 1 lakh km, the battery and motor warranties typically stand at 8 years or 1.6 lakh km, whichever comes first. This is offered across brands like Tata, MG, Hyundai, Mahindra and more for most variants.

However, Tata, MG and Mahindra also offer “lifetime” battery warranties for selected top variants. A closer look reveals that this usually means 15 years of coverage for the first owner.

On resale, the “lifetime” battery warranty is usually downgraded to the standard 8 years/1.6 lakh km from the date of first registration. So a Tata Punch EV with a “lifetime” battery warranty for the first owner would transform into an 8-year/1.6L km battery warranty for the second owner. Many warranties also carry a guarantee of retention of battery capacity – 70 – 80% of original capacity during the warranty period. This means that if the capacity dips below this threshold (without accident or misuse), the manufacturer may undertake repairs or replacement of modules or the entire pack.

It is important to read the fine print on the warranty booklet, particularly concerning annual servicing at an authorised centre, charging practices, impact of accidents and commercial use. These factors may play a role in determining eligibility for claim.

EV battery replacement cost in India

Battery replacement costs outside of warranty can prove to be a huge expense. Based on current market rates, battery replacement costs in India stand at approximately ₹15,000 – ₹22,000 per kWh (installed).

Indicative out-of-warranty battery replacement costs would be:

Tata Nexon EV (40-45kWh pack): ~ ₹5 – 6 Lakh for a full pack replacement.

Module-based repair: Depending on the number of modules impacted, anywhere between ₹60,000 – 2 Lakh.

For smaller packs like a 19.2kWh Tiago EV, the replacement costs would be proportionately lesser, but still running into several Lakhs for the entire pack.

This is why battery warranty and SoH (State of Health) is such a critical determinant for the long-term value proposition of an EV. A single out-of-pocket battery replacement can devour the savings on fuel costs accumulated over years of ownership.

Impact of battery health on EV resale value

When it comes to the used car market, the battery turns out to be the most crucial determinant of an EV’s resale value.

Based on data from the used car market, the depreciation trends for passenger EVs in India are as follows:

~ 55 – 68% retention of value on average after 3 years of ownership.

~ 42 – 52% retention of value on average after 5 years of ownership.

These numbers are dependent on the model, condition and battery health of the vehicle. For the same model and condition, a used EV with 90%+ battery health can command a price premium of ₹40,000 – ₹70,000 over an identical vehicle with 75 – 80% battery health.

A high mileage EV (in excess of 50,000 km) also sees a drop in value on account of higher number of charge cycles completed. On average, every 10,000 km beyond 50,000 km reduces the value of an EV by ₹25,000 – ₹40,000. The remaining battery warranty also plays a role: an EV with 8-year/1.6L km warranty still on the clock will have a higher value than one nearing the end of its warranty period.

Studies from global markets have shown that aggressive fast charging and hot climates combine to accelerate battery degradation – with taxi EVs (which undertake frequent fast charging) witnessing faster capacity reduction than private cars. For the individual EV buyer, this means better retention of value for a private car that is mostly charged on a home charger.

Key considerations for Indian EV buyers

Both new and used EV buyers should consider the following pointers before purchasing:

For new EVs

Warranty type: What is the type of warranty offered – standard 8-year/1.6L km or “lifetime” for the first owner? What does “lifetime” actually mean in terms of time?

Transferability: How does the battery warranty translate on resale in case of a private car sale within 3 – 5 years?

SoH guarantee: What is the minimum State of Health (SoH) guaranteed on the battery during the warranty period?

Service conditions: Does the warranty booklet specify mandated servicing at an authorised centre and charging guidelines for the warranty to remain valid?

For used EVs

Battery report: Request for a diagnostic report to determine the current battery SoH (%), total energy throughput and if any modules have been replaced.

Warranty status: Obtain the original invoice to determine the first registration date and the time remaining on the warranty (8-year/1.6L km or its ‘lifetime’ equivalent).

Charging history: Where possible, try to determine is the car has predominantly been charged on a home AC charger or a public DC fast charging station.

Accident/flood history: Battery packs damaged in an accident or flood can have hidden issues.

Is an EV a financially viable option?

Despite the factors outlined above, an EV still has the potential to be a financially viable option for the Indian buyer:

Fuel cost differential: An EV charged on a home charger typically costs ₹1 – 1.5 per km (vs ₹5.5 – 8.5 per km for petrol cars) – leading to significant savings over 5 years of ownership.

Warranty: In case of a personal EV, it is very likely to be sold well within its 8-year battery warranty period.

Battery longevity: Real world data suggests that EV batteries are seeing a steady decline in capacity, averaging 2% per annum.

The battery needs to be treated as the single most valuable asset of an EV. By understanding the details of the warranty and maintaining it, as well as factoring battery health into resale calculations, the buyer can extract maximum value from an EV.
