Moto Guzzi has unveiled their latest medium capacity sport bike the Trip 500.

This new model will be built at the Piaggio Baramati plant in Maharashtra. This means it will share the same manufacturing plant as the Aprilia RS 457 and Tuono 457. The Trip 500 will be released in Europe early 2027, and will be unveiled publicly to the world at EICMA 2026, Milan (3rd-8th November).

A Step Away From Tradition

The Trip 500 is a big step out of the box for Moto Guzzi. They have been known for their classic V-Twin engines, along with their unique designs. However, the Trip 500 has a more modern parallel twin liquid cooled engine from Aprilia.

This means Moto Guzzi will be able to jump into a more affordable market without having to develop a brand new engine. Thanks to the proven Aprilia 457 platform, the Piaggio Group can benefit from the economies of scale. Giving Moto Guzzi a more different feel compared to Aprilia.

Engine

The Trip 500 will feature the same 457 cc liquid cooled parallel twin engine found on the Aprilia RS 457 and Tuono 457. Moto Guzzi claim it will put out “almost 48hp”, meaning it will fall under A2 licensing requirements in Europe. The Aprilia models put out 47.6hp and 43.5Nm. However, the Trip 500 has been tuned to make the torque more accessible at lower revs.

A 6 speed gearbox has been fitted. Although the power output is not much different to the Aprilia models, Moto Guzzi have focused on making the Trip 500 more easy to ride. This makes sense considering it is a sport bike, so will require more torque at lower and mid revs.

Design

The Trip 500 has a clean minimalist design. Featuring a round LED headlight, stylish shaped fuel tank with a 15 litre capacity and blacked out parallel twin engine. The bike has a very clean look with less aggressive bodywork than the Aprilia RS 457/Tuono 457.

Some design elements have been added to give it a more Moto Guzzi feel. The headlight graphics have an eagle theme and “The Trip” is stitched onto the seat.

Weight and Height

The Trip 500 will weigh 180kg wet and will have a seat height from 790mm. This makes it an easy to ride bike, making it perfect for newer riders or those coming from smaller capacities. The low seat height should make it a great urban rider.

The 15 litre fuel tank will provide a good range for a medium capacity sport bike. The upright sport bike ergonomics make it seem like it has been designed to be a very versatile bike. Great for commuting, weekend riding and longer distances.

Features

Despite the simple design, the Trip 500 has some great modern features. With Ride by Wire throttle and 3 riding modes available. Road, Sport and Rain. You can easily tailor the throttle response.

Some other features include:

3.6 inch round TFT dash.

Smartphone connectivity.

Navigation pictograms.

Backlit switches.

All LED lighting.

Quickshifter (Optional)

The quickshifter will be an optional extra. However, if you want quicker clutchless upshifts then you will have to pay extra. The standard models will come with traditional gear changes.

Colours

There will be 3 colours available for the Trip 500. Black Metropolis, Green Grove and Red Beat. There will also be a special edition version called “The Opening”. This will likely be more exclusive for early buyers.

The colours and special edition show Moto Guzzi are looking to make the Trip 500 more than just an Aprilia rebadge. They seem to be targeting those looking for an Italian looking bike with a unique badge.

Connection to India

Although this will initially be sold in Europe, it will have a strong connection to India. As it will be built at the Baramati plant. This plant already builds the Aprilia RS 457 and Tuono 457, which are both sold in India. This could make it easier for Piaggio Group to look at bringing it to India in the future.

However, Moto Guzzi have not confirmed it will be brought to India. If it is then it will likely be a premium medium capacity sport bike. Competing against bikes from Royal Enfield, Triumph, KTM and Honda.

Competition

The Trip 500 is entering a growing market in both India and Europe. Royal Enfield will be launching their flagship Himalayan 750 at the same event. TVS owned Norton is also planning to release a 450cc single cylinder sport bike. These show that manufacturers are looking to expand their medium capacity premium commuter range.

The Trip 500 could be a great way to get into the Moto Guzzi brand. Those who find the bigger V-Twin models too pricey or heavy may find the Trip 500 attractive. As it has an Aprilia engine, modern tech and is easy to manage.

Expectations

The Trip 500 is a key model for Moto Guzzi and the Piaggio Group. The bike will have an Italian brand feel with a sport bike look. It will also be built in India with an Aprilia platform. This will make it appealing to many riders. When it comes out in Europe early 2027 we will see how the market reacts to Moto Guzzi straying away from their traditional V-Twin layout.

The main thing to watch for is whether Piaggio will bring the Trip 500 to India. As it is built locally, and shares the same platform as the RS 457 and Tuono 457, there is a chance they will. However, Moto Guzzi have not officially confirmed anything. So for now it is an exciting Indian built bike that may or may not come to India.
