The Indian auto market is in full festive-season mode, with a string of high-profile launches, strategic tie-ups and new discounts dominating the headlines. From Kia’s first hybrid SUV to a potential game-changing JV for Skoda–VW India, here are the biggest trending auto stories this week.

Kia Sorento launched in India: First hybrid SUV from ₹27.99 lakh

Kia India has launched the Sorento, its new flagship three-row SUV, with prices starting at ₹27.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The Sorento is Kia’s first strong-hybrid model in India and is aimed against the Mahindra XUV 7XO, Tata Safari and MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV.

Key highlights:

1.6L turbo-petrol strong hybrid (around 177 bhp + 64 bhp electric motor) with 6-speed automatic

2.2L diesel with 8-speed DCT

Seating: 6-seater and 7-seater options

Features: Dual 12.3-inch screens, panoramic sunroof, Level 2 ADAS, 360° camera, ventilated seats and more

Target: Kia will be targeting monthly volumes of up to 4,000 units as it expands its hybrid and multi-powertrain strategy.

The Sorento launch is a key shift for Kia in India as it aims to go beyond petrol/diesel and build a credible hybrid lineup ahead of stricter emission norms.

Skoda–VW India + JSW Group: 51:49 JV plan takes shape

One of the most significant strategic moves this week is the non-binding MoU between Skoda Auto Volkswagen India (SAVWIPL) and the JSW Group to explore a 51:49 joint venture, with JSW to potentially hold the majority stake.

What we know so far:

The MoU initiates exclusive negotiations on valuations and deal structure, targeting a final binding agreement by end-2026.

The proposed JV will be based on joint control, with clearly defined roles and fast decision-making mechanisms.

For Skoda–VW, the partnership can bring capital, localisation muscle, policy support and supply-chain synergies.

For JSW, it brings in a German-engineered portfolio on to its existing JSW MG Motor India business, making it a multi-brand automotive group.

If successful, the deal could reshape the competitive landscape in the premium-mass and premium segments, enabling Skoda and VW to localise more aggressively, expand their dealer network and accelerate their EV and hybrid plans.
