India’s luxury EV segment is set to get a new entrant when Chinese EV giant BYD launches a premium sub-brand, ‘Denza,’ in India by end-2026.

Denza’s two flagship electric vehicles (EVs) are a Z9 GT performance fastback and D9 luxury MPV, to arrive as CBU imports and target customers’ demand for technology, performance, and exclusivity (not value).
Denza Z9 GT – India’s Most Powerful EV?
The Z9 GT is a four-door electric shooting brake that can potentially become one of India’s most powerful cars.
Performance and powertrain
The tri-motor powertrain consists of a front and two rear motors, which generate an enormous 1,156 hp (about 1,140 bhp) and 1,210 Nm of torque. Despite the mighty power, the Z9 GT weighs almost 2.9 tonnes and can acceleration from 0–100 km/h in 2.7 seconds before reaching a claimed top speed of 270 km/h.
Battery and range
A 122.5 kWh Blade Battery (second-generation cell-to-body construction) is claimed to provide a WLTP range of around 600 km, somewhat limited for an ultra-performance EV. However, the ability to use a 1,500 kW Flash ultra-fast charging, which can propel the Z9 GT from 10 to 97 per cent battery in nine minutes (if the appropriate charging infrastructure is available).
Drive and handling
The Z9 GT has an active rear-wheel steering system to enable crab-walk manoeuvres and very tight 360-degree rotations. Combined with a dual-chamber air suspension (Disus-A) and active body control, the Z9 GT promises to keep the cabin flat during acceleration and braking.
Interior
The Z9 GT has five seats, with heavily-bolstered front buckets and adjustable under-thigh supports, heating, and massage functions for the four outer seats. The captain’s seats in the second row also offer massage, heating, and ventilation, with reclining functions and extendable leg-rests. The rear seats also provide ample legroom, and the cabin offers a Devialet premium audio system, digital camera-based mirrors, and ambient lighting.
Price expectations
The Z9 GT is expected to cost between ₹1.2 crore and ₹1.5 crore (ex-showroom, before options), and compete directly with high-performance EVs and luxury GTs rather than mainstream EV sedans. The Z9 GT is also expected to become a halo car to establish Denza’s performance credentials.
Denza D9 – Luxury EV MPV for Families and Executives
While the Z9 GT’s primary USP is performance, the D9 is all about space, comfort, and executive-luxury.
Powertrain, range and charging
The globally-available electric MPV is expected to be launched as a front-wheel-drive EV in India. The single front-mounted motor delivers around 313 hp and 360 Nm of torque, with a 103 kWh Blade Battery providing a claimed WLTP range of around 520 km. The D9 also supports up to 200 kW DC fast-charging. Interestingly, the D9’s 2+2+3 seating layout also resembles that of the Vellfire.
Cabin, comfort and features
The D9 also features an active body control system to reduce fore-aft pitching during acceleration and braking to better maintain a ‘flat’ cabin. The two captain’s seats in the second row are expected to offer similar massage, heating, ventilation, and extendable leg-rest functions as the Z9 GT, along with fold-out tables. Also, expect a three-zone climate control system, Dynaudio premium audio system, and leather upholstery throughout the cabin, with large displays for infotainment, connectivity, and a suite of driver-assistance systems.

Safety and structural integrity
The D9 is also expected to adopt BYD’s cell-to-body construction methods to improve torsional rigidity while reducing overall weight, and a comprehensive set of airbags and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) will likely be included to match the safety expectations for an executive MPV.
Price expectations
The D9 is expected to cost around ₹80 lakh, and is likely to compete directly with the upcoming MG M9 EV and Toyota Vellfire. This makes the D9 ideally suited for business owners, corporate executives, and large families that want a premium electric alternative to conventional luxury MPVs and large premium SUVs.
Why Denza’s India Entry Matters
Denza demonstrates that Chinese EV companies are targeting India’s luxury segment with technology-focused products, rather than focusing solely on mainstream EVs and entry-level EVs.
Performance benchmark
The Z9 GT has the potential to become one of the most powerful cars in India, and force competitors to respond in kind with faster EVs and charging solutions.
Luxury MPV segment
The introduction of the electric MPV D9 also underlines the growing appeal of EVs in this segment, and how such a vehicle can serve as a viable alternative to traditional luxury vans and large premium SUVs for affluent buyers.
Charging narrative
With a global emphasis on ultra-fast charging infrastructure (up to 1,500 kW), Denza will also force local stakeholders to re-evaluate high-power charging options for premium EVs.
What Indian Buyers Should Watch For
Beyond the headline figures and specifications of the Z9 GT and D9, there are several key factors that will determine the success of Denza’s India launch:
After-sales and service
As a new entrant, Denza will need to invest in establishing a dedicated network of showrooms and service centres, or leverage the infrastructure of its parent company, BYD.
Charging infrastructure
The nine-minute “10–97%” battery claim is only possible with ultra-fast chargers, which may take time to install in India. Until then, buyers will have to contend with slower charging speeds.
Resale and brand value
Luxury EV buyers are also likely to consider the long-term value of Denza, as compared to more established luxury brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi.
